Overview

The Biological Heritage National Science Challenge (BioHeritage) brought together leading researchers, agencies, iwi and communities to tackle Aotearoa’s native biodiversity and biosecurity issues. Biological Heritage NZ+2Landcare Research+2
I was commissioned to craft a film that would translate this complex scientific mission into a clear, engaging story — covering research teams, tools & tech, cultural partnerships and the national scale of the challenge.
As writer, director, cinematographer and editor, I delivered the full pipeline from concept to final deliverables.
The client rated the final work as 5-star for its clarity, visual quality and ability to engage non-scientific audiences.

The Approach

To turn a high-level science initiative into an emotionally compelling film, the process was:

  • Research & scripting — translating scientific language and stakeholders’ voices into narrative structure.

  • Location shoots — capturing researchers in labs, field work across landscapes, aerial shots of ecosystems, macro close-ups of flora/fauna and cultural elements working alongside science.

  • Mixed media — drone flights, timelapses, macro rigs, interview setups, environmental B-roll and strong design motion-graphics.

  • Editing & post-production — full editorial handling: story cut, colour grade, sound design, motion graphics, cut-downs for social/digital platforms.

  • Stakeholder review & impact editing — worked in iterations with the client to ensure scientific accuracy, cultural sensitivity and brand alignment.

Outcome

The film has been used across BioHeritage’s communications, partner networks, conferences and online platforms, giving the initiative a strong visual identity and helping bridge the gap between science and public understanding.
