The Robin McKenzie Story – Brand Documentary
Client: McKenzie Global
Sector: Health / Physiotherapy / Wellness / Education
Location: New Zealand (Wellington & beyond)
Film Type: Long-form Brand Story / Documentary
Your Role: Director / Cinematographer / Editor
Overview
Robin McKenzie was a pioneering New Zealand physiotherapist whose work transformed the way people understand spine health, back pain and rehabilitation globally. His methods reached world-leaders, athletes and everyday people alike.
I was commissioned to create a long-form brand-story-documentary for McKenzie Global that would capture the life, legacy and global impact of Robin’s work — blending personal story, clinical innovation and the human journey.
The project resulted in:
A long-form documentary-style film 11 mins
A brand story usable for global distribution
Source material for social cut-downs and educational use
The Outcome
The McKenzie Global film now serves as a flagship asset for the brand worldwide. It communicates their founder’s legacy, the value of the McKenzie method, and the human story behind the science.
The film has been used for:
Global brand launch and internal communication
Educational distribution to physiotherapists & clinics
Social and website rollout
Legacy storytelling to anchor the brand’s future
It positioned McKenzie Global not just as a physiotherapy brand, but as a global health-movement founded in New Zealand.
Delivered Assets
Feature-length documentary (long-form)
Brand story cut-down (~3–5 mins)
Social versions & cut-downs
B-roll archive
Still-frame library
Motion graphics for education/training
Planning something similar? Let’s talk.
If you need a filmmaker who can handle deep legacy storytelling, high-production value documentary style, meaningful narrative arcs and full production/edition end-to-end — I’d love to collaborate.
The Approach
1. Deep Research & Scripting
We began by mapping Robin’s life — his early New Zealand career, his physiotherapy breakthroughs, his clients (including prime ministers), and the cultural significance of his work.
As part of this, a fun anecdote: Robin’s story inspired an episode of The Simpsons (where a character falls backwards over a trash-can and changes chiropractors) — and we wove that into the narrative to show cultural reach and humour.
2. Production Across New Zealand
I built a production plan for high-impact visuals:
Interviews with practitioners, legacy partners and Robin’s colleagues
Archival imagery, historical footage and photographic stills
Re-creations/illustrative sequences to bring key moments to life
On-location filming where Robin trained and worked, including Wellington & New Zealand back-drops
A cinematic grade: slow movement, warm tone, precise framing, evocative sound design
3. Post-Production & Delivery
I took the project through full post production:
Picture edit
Sound design (including voice-over, archival audio, ambient landscapes)
Colour grade, motion graphics, titles
Versions for brand launch, website, social platforms, internal training
Educational cut-downs for clinics and partners
